Planned Parenthood receives 'outpouring of support' in donations after defunding bill

Planned Parenthood of Indiana is still offering temporary coverage to Medicaid patients.

Due to what the organization called an “outpouring of support,” Planned Parenthood will continue to offer services to Medicaid patients through May 30.

Planned Parenthood originally said they would only be able to extend coverage to Medicaid patients until May 21.

The organization extended the date from May 21 to May 30 because of sustained donations.

In a statement to the press, Planned Parenthood said they had received more than $50,000 in donations since Gov. Mitch Daniels signed H.B. 1210, a bill that cuts off federal funding to Planned Parenthood that is allocated to it through the state.

Donations have come from 44 states and several foreign countries, according to a statement released by Becky Cockrum, the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana. The funding that was cut by the bill amounted to approximately 13 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget and potentially puts several clinics at risk for closure.

Planned Parenthood has filed for an injunction that will be decided in a hearing in federal court June 6.

Individuals will still be able to receive care at Planned Parenthood clinics across the state, including those in Bloomington.

However, Medicaid patients will not be able to continue to receive care under their Medicaid plans at Planned Parenthood’s clinics in the future unless the law is overturned by the court.
