Wiz and weed spark colorful third album

Although Wiz Khalifa is far from being a socially conscious rapper, he is still a refreshing change from the violent gangster vibe that has become a staple of mainstream rap.
Most of his lyrics describe free-spirited partying, smoking weed, drinking and getting women. He stays true to form with his latest album “Rolling Papers.”

As the title suggests, it is weed music. It is laid-back and sing-songy with colorful riffs beneath the lyrics and beat. None of the songs are too fast-paced or angsty. Content doesn’t vary much from song to song on the album.

The most popular song from the album, “Black and Yellow,” paid homage to his hometown of Pittsburgh’s beloved Steelers. It was the anthem for Steelers fans during the 2010 football season and playoffs and inspired many spin-off songs, including “Green and Yellow” by Lil Wayne.

While it’s the most popular, it’s far from the best track on the album. The lyrics, especially the hook, leave much to be desired. Other songs like “When I’m Gone,” “Get Your Shit” and “Star of the Show” are more personal and thoughtful. The 16 to 24 age demographic can relate to the lyrics because it covers the four main focuses of young people — partying, friends, relationships and hopes for the future.
