Neuenswander, distance runners lead Hoosiers into weekend meet

The Big Ten has named senior pole-vaulter Vera Neuenswander “Athlete of the Week” for a second time. Coach Ron Helmer said she is the only pole-vaulter in IU history to jump the heights she is at right now. Her jump of 4.25 meters not only won the event Saturday at the Border Battle, but also put her into the nation’s top-10.

The distance runners will lead the men’s team this weekend. Juniors Ben Hubers, Andrew Poore and De’Sean Turner swept the board at the Border Battle in the 1,500-meter run. Hubers won the event with a time of 3:47.15.

With a little more than one month to go until the Regional Championship, the Hoosiers are focusing on putting their best marks on the scorecard.

“We know what typically gets people into the regional meet,” Helmer said. “We need to get people to a point where they have marks on the board that will get them into the regional championships.”

The Indiana Invitational begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Haugh Track and Field Complex.
