Lawyer requests change of venue in school shooting case

Michael Phelps, the 15-year-old who allegedly shot a classmate at West Middle School in Martinsville on March 25, will soon undergo trial.

His attorney, Steven Litz, requested the trial be conducted as soon as possible. He also requested the trial be moved to another county.

Court I Judge G. Thomas Gray told Litz to file a written motion for a change of venue, after which he would make his decision.

Phelps is charged with  attempted murder, a Class A felony; aggravated battery, a Class B felony; carrying a handgun without a license on school property, a Class C felony; and trespassing on school property, possessing a firearm on school property and theft, all Class D felonies.

Chance Jackson, the victim, is currently recovering in an Indianapolis hospital.
