Communications VP to transition

Mark Land, IU alumnus and former IU journalism lecturer, will replace Larry MacIntyre as the associate vice president of university communications July 1. MacIntyre will retire June 30.

“The first thing I want to do is continue the really good work that has been done by Larry MacIntyre and his team over there now,” Land said. “Larry does a terrific job especially handling the media relations and has done a very nice job of handling the messaging for the University so we want to build on that good work.”

In addition to carrying on MacIntyre’s legacy, Land said he hopes to improve other areas.

“I am extremely interested in strengthening the internal communications within the University, so the way the University talks to its employees, students and parents,” he said. “I’m sure I will be active in helping us get President McRobbie’s message out to a broad audience.”

Land, who is currently executive director for corporate communications at Cummins Inc., said it took a lot for him to consider leaving.

“I have a very good job now,” he said. “I have been here almost eight years, so the fact that I would even consider leaving meant that the job had to be pretty special and had to be at a special place. This job qualifies, and IU certainly qualifies. I was extremely excited.”

Land said this new job is like coming home for his wife and him.

“We met at IU while we were both staff members of the IDS so the place means a lot to me,” he said. “Bloomington means a lot. To have the University trust me to have an important role like this and a role that is this highly visible really means a lot. I am very much looking forward to getting started, and my wife and I are looking forward to moving to Bloomington and being a part of the community.”

This is an exciting time for IU, Land said.

“I think the work that President McRobbie and staff have been doing to strengthen IU over the past few years has been really impressive,” he said. “Everyone wants to play on a good team, and I am very excited to be joining what I think is an
outstanding team.”
