With Tax Day swiftly approaching, students of the IU Maurer School of Law and Kelley School of Business are stepping up to help Bloomington residents file taxes.
As part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA) program, the law and business students will be providing free tax assistance to low-income, elderly, disabled and limited English-speaking residents beginning Feb. 7.
The month-long program will assist those residents earning a yearly income of $49,000 or less, provided they do not own businesses and have not received income from the sale of mutual funds, homes or stocks.
The program will begin on Monday, Feb. 7 in room 121 of the law school, located at 211 S. Indiana Ave.
Walk-in hours are scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays until March 10.
Any taxpayer looking to participate in the VITA program this month should bring a W-2 form, photo identification, Social Security card and relevant income documents to their walk-in session.
All volunteers from the Maurer School of Law and Kelley School of Business have been trained and certified by the IRS to help prepare tax return documents and will be available for consultation each day of the program.
