Several details have been released by IU Police Chief Keith Cash regarding an incident at Phi Sigma Kappa on Friday which caused greek social events to be postponed until further notice.
When IUPD and emergency workers responded to a call for medical assistance for a non-member of Phi Sig at the fraternity house Friday, they found the man not breathing, Cash said.
The man was revived and taken to Bloomington Hospital, where Cash said he remains hospitalized.
The 19-year-old is an IU student, who lives in Briscoe Quad, Cash added. He said IUPD is not releasing the man’s name yet out of respect for the family because the case remains under investigation.
IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre said it is unlikely the University will be able to release information or comment until the police investigation is complete.
He added that because the man is a student, University officials are limited in what they can say, even if they knew something about the student’s condition.
Cash said there were signs the man had been ill at some point earlier. There were also signs of drug use in the man’s residence, but no signs of drug use at the Phi Sig house.
Cash said police are attempting to determine if alcohol or drug use may have contributed to the student’s condition at the scene and are awaiting the results of medical tests.
The police are currently working to get more information from Bloomington Hospital.
Updates will continuing as information becomes available. Continue checking idsnews.com for further coverage.
