Union Board voting begins online today

Applications have been turned in, and the campaign posters have been hung.

The voting stage of the Union Board election process begins online at 6 p.m. today and continues until 6 p.m.  tomorrow.

Students can vote on the Indiana Memorial Union website, www.imu.indiana.edu/board/index.shtml or at a polling booth in State Room East in the IMU on Wednesday.

“Students should vote because Union Board is the largest programming body on campus,” said Shannon Cook, senior and Union Board elections commissioner. “The eight directors that are selected have a large say in how student activities are planned.”

Directors also impact how part of tuition money is spent, said senior and Union Board President Sean Liston.

“Voting is open to all students because Union Board tries to program for everyone, therefore, everyone should get a say,” Liston said. The election process is
complex, said senior and IU Student Association President Michael Coleman, who is also sitting on the selection committee.

“There are 35 people running, and the eight candidates with the most votes will become Union Board directors,” Coleman said. “The rest of the 27 candidates will be interviewed by the selection committee on Friday, who will select eight more candidates to become directors.”

The committee consists of a group of campus leaders, such as Union Board and IUSA presidents. The 16 new directors will attend a retreat in January to determine which committee position they will attain on Union Board.

Junior and Union Board Canvas Director AJ O’Reilly is one of the few current Union Board directors running for re-election.

“I decided to run again because I really enjoy being on Union Board,” O’Reilly said. “It’s fun meeting all the new people on the different committees, and it has definitely shaped my college experience.”
