Though Take Back the Night began as a response to the stabbing of microbiologist Susan Alexander Speeth in 1975, the IU community did not participate in the memorial until 2000.
The first take Back the Night event at IU began in Dunn Meadow and ended in a march to the courthouse — a tradition that continued in following years.
During the most recent TBTN, decorated t-shirts displaying stories and raising awareness of sexual violence and assault hung in the meadow.
At the courthouse, members of the crowd began to tell their stories, according to an IDS article.
"There were pictures." "He was my stepfather." "I don't want to make this a big deal."
