New fieldhouse tuition increase address; rally in Dunn Meadow

boycott

A battle between a seven-man student government committee and three IU vice presidents at the new fieldhouse canceled classes so students could attend the discussion.

Approximately 800 students listened as the government members made suggestions on how to reconstruct budget priorities.

The meeting came after an announced 68 percent increase in tuition fees for the following year.

The following day, speakers at a rally in Dunn Meadow discussed student demands concerning the 68 percent fee increase urged participants to meet outside Owen Hall for the administration's response.

Their demands asked the administration to declare a freeze on the tuition increase, allow an elected student committee with parity (veto vote) to work with administrators on the budget, have a graduated tuition based on the ability to pay and have no tuition by 1972.

After the rally's crowd dwindled from 3,000 to 800 members, the remaining participants marched to the IU Auditorium to burn in effigy IU trustee Frank McKinney.

"Referring to the burning of Frank McKinney, chairman of the Board of Trustees, in effigy last night, (Student Body President Paul) Helmke said, 'marshmallow roast tactics won't get anyplace,'" according to an IDS article.
