IU trustees approve degrees, construction projects

The IU Board of Trustees met again Friday to discuss the finance and facilities committees and approve the issues that were deliberated Thursday.

All nine trustees were present to approve eight new degrees, the 2011 audit report, a design approval, project approval and consent item approval as well as all personnel actions.

Nothing that was brought to the board was disapproved.

The design for the new sports complex garage expansion on the IU-Purdue University Indianapolis campus was approved, which will consist of 1,300 additional parking spaces. The cost is estimated at $18 million, which will be funded through auxiliary revenue bonds to be repaid by the IUPUI Parking Operating funds.

Two other major projects that were approved are the renovation to the Psychology Lecture Hall 100 and the replacement of sections of the Assembly Hall roof on the Bloomington campus.

The electrical, technical and mechanical upgrades will be included in the renovation as well as an update to the aesthetics and function of the space of the Psychology lecture hall. The total estimated cost is around $912,000.

“This space has been for a long time in desperate need of new seating and to be assessable,” Vice President for Capital Projects and Facilities Tom Morrison said in his address to the board. “We will add an accessibility component, new lighting, new wall covering.”

The board also approved the request to proceed with the second phase of the Assembly Hall roof replacement, where a new roof will be put on the north and south entrances of the building. The total estimated cost of this phase is $850,000.

Besides the construction projects, three new degrees were approved for the Bloomington campus, including a Ph.D. in environmental health, a Ph.D. in epidemiology and a M.S. in medical physics.
