It’s happened to all of us. You’re enjoying a quiet evening in with the boyfriend/girlfriend, sharing a home cooked lasagna dinner and watching “Law and Order” reruns, when all of a sudden this episode’s shady local bar owner/double homicide witness catches your eye.
“Hey, isn’t that the guy from the ‘Can you hear me now?’ commercials?”
“No way, his nose was way bigger. Plus, this guy has blonde hair.”
The argument ensues. Money, food and sexual favors are wagered. IMDb is consulted and ultimately, you emerge the loser.
Luckily for you, we can relate, and we’ve done a little research on some of our favorite commercial personalities to make sure you’re always prepared.
The man you wish that your man smelled like
Prior to his recently found Old Spice fame, Isaiah Mustafa’s acting credits look a bit sparse.
In 2008 he was in a few episodes of “NCIS,” and he appeared on “Ugly Betty.”
The popular commercials and subsequent YouTube campaign seem to be paying off, though. He’s recently been cast in a new Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy, “Horrible Bosses,” and he signed a talent deal with NBC, so don’t be surprised if he pops up in “30 Rock,” “Community” and the like.
The Most Interesting Man in the World
The debonair shill for Dos Equis is actually played by a guy who has one of the most interesting filmographies in the world.
Try and keep up with this list of all of the classic TV shows that actor Jonathan Goldsmith has been in: “Star Trek,” “The Fugitive,” “Mission Impossible,” “Gunsmoke,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Barnaby Jones,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “CHiPs,” “T.J. Hooker,” “The A-Team,” “Knight Rider,” “Magnum P.I.”, “McGyver,” “Dallas,” “Dragnet” and “Murder, She Wrote.”
His personal life, as well, sounds too cool to be real — today Goldsmith can be found living on his 43-foot yacht in California, off of which he spread the ashes of his former close friend Fernando Lamas following his death.
The Miller High Life Guy
You’d think that someone named Windell D. Middlebrooks would be the pompous antagonist of these commercials, sitting high in his luxury box at a Red Wings game, but it’s actually the name of the actor who portrays this Robin Hood of beer truck delivery men. Middlebrooks recently had a one-episode role in the newest season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and has appeared in episodes of “Scrubs,” “Cougar Town” and “Parks and Recreation” since his debut as the Miller High Life Guy. Prior to his commercial fame, you could find him playing parts in everything from “Hannah Montana” to “Entourage.”
UPS whiteboard guy
The whiteboard artist that uses complicated illustrations to turn painfully obvious facts into sales pitches (oh really, UPS uses planes instead of trucks to deliver mail overseas? Genius.) isn’t actually an actor but a professional ad-man and current creative director for The Martin Agency, Andy Azula. He’s worked on ads for BMW, Budweiser and Lee Jeans among others, but the UPS commercials were his only acting gig. Thank God, because who could stand to see this guy in anything else, trying to seem smart because he knows that trucks don’t float?
Hey, didn’t you play in...?
