What happened to Weezer?

With the release of their new album, “Hurley,” Rivers Cuomo continues to ruin his credibility as a songwriter. It’s an overproduced mess of corny lyrics and terrible hooks.

What’s really striking is how similar the music is to pre-teen pop/rock. The only audience I could understand liking this would be middle schoolers. The Jonas Brothers could cover almost all these songs, and it would fit perfectly into their repertoire.

You just can’t have a song start off with the line, “I’m sick and tired of people telling me what to do” and expect listeners to take it seriously. This would all be okay if the songs were catchy, but the hooks fall flat and the seemingly half-written melodies just cannot carry the weight of their douche-y lyrics.

What really sums up the experience of listening to this album is the pointless bonus cover of “Viva La Vida,” leaving the typical “Pinkerton” and “Blue” album Weezer fan asking, “Why?”
