In the final days of warm weather, members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity will try to make the most it.
The fraternity’s second “Lake Lemon Triathlon” — a USA Triathlon officially sanctioned race — will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at Lake Lemon in Unionville, Ind. The lake is about a 10-minute drive from IU Bloomington’s campus.
The race — a half-mile swim, 16-mile bike ride and three-mile run — will cost $50 for USA Triathlon members and $60 for non-members.
Online registration closes at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday but interested participants can register late Friday prior to the race at Phi Kappa Psi, located at 1200 N. Jordan Ave. Participants can also register early at Lake Lemon the morning of the race. Late registration payments can only be made by cash or check.
Though the fraternity’s official philanthropy partner is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, all event proceeds will be donated to the American Heart
Association.
“It’s become a heart-healthy event,” said junior and Race Treasurer Spencer Springer. “The American Heart Association goes hand in hand with staying healthy, promoting good health and really pushing yourself.”
Last year, 198 people competed, Smith said, and the fraternity hopes for 250 participants this year.
Males and females compete in separate categories, and there will be 12 age groups. There will be awards for the top IU finishers as well as the top greek finisher.
Last year, more community members participated than college students, Smith said, but there has been increased interest from the IU community this year.
“It’s one of the last triathlon you can do before it gets cold,” said junior Evan McCaulay, race co-director. “It sort of marks the end of the season.”
