IU will open its season at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind. this weekend.
Wolf Run is currently ranked the 18th best course in the country in Golfweek’s America’s 100 Best Modern Courses.
Junior David Erdy set the competitive course record with a 65 (-7) in 2009. However, Erdy said he doesn’t believe he’s the only one who has a chance of going low this weekend.
“If the conditions are good and the course is set up right, I don’t have a doubt that anybody on this team could break the record,” Erdy said.
Along with Erdy, fellow junior Chase Wright, fresh off his victory at the Indiana Open this summer, said he is looking forward to the start of the season.
“We’re excited to get going. It’s a lot of fun out there, and before you know it, it’s over,” Wright said.
While Wright and Erdy will lead many freshman and sophomores on the team this season, IU coach Mike Mayer has full confidence in his veterans.
“In a way, we’re young, but in a way, we’re not,” Mayer said. “We actually have a lot of experience when you look at the lineup.”
Mayer said he believes his freshman and sophomores will not only be ready to go this year, but also ready to thrive.
“I think they can flat out play. It’s going to be hard to keep them out of the lineup,” Mayer said.
Along with Wright and Erdy, IU’s lineup will feature senior Ren Han, sophomores Brant Peaper and Corey Ziedonis and freshman David Mills.
“Any sport in a conference such as the Big Ten is going to be tough,” Mayer said. “Everybody is getting better, so there is no reason to think this won’t be a competitive but fun year.”
