The IU Libraries received a $49,504 grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The grant will fund the next phase in development of the Variations digital music library system.
Variations was developed by IU and acts as an open-source system to offer online access to selected music recordings.
The system is now used by multiple college and university libraries across the nation.
With the grant, staff in IU’s Digital Library Program will work to expand beyond music and adapt the current software to produce digital video collections for the new Variations on Video project.
IU Libraries will collaborate with Northwestern University Library and will also include participants from the University of Miami, New York University, Ohio State University and Stanford University.
DuraSpace and Opencast Matterhorn, two higher education open-source groups, will add their expertise in content management.
Variations on Video will cater to those students, professors and faculty members who would benefit from improved access to digital video collections.
