With the release of “Something for the Rest of Us,” the Goo Goo Dolls’ career has officially spanned across four decades.
While their longevity is certainly respectable for a pop-rock group, the trio was at the height of their musical genius during the late 1990s, when most college students were coming of age. Unfortunately, everything since then has been a mere shadow of hits like “Iris” and “Slide,” and the latest album is no different.
Full of the band’s typical radio-friendly love ballads, “Something for the Rest of Us” is tinged with a bit more melancholy and mediocrity than ever before.
Still, the songs are easy to listen to and have a certain nostalgic quality that makes the album instantaneously likeable.
Fifteen years after their first platinum album, the Goo Goo Dolls continue to produce more of the same thing — stunning lyrics and recognizable melodies.
So while the band hasn’t matured as much as the rest of us in the past 12 years, that might just be a good thing.
‘For the Rest of Us’ really only for fans
