Cyclist hit by car traveling on Fee Lane

Bike Accident

A female student, 17, was struck by a car at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. The student was biking northbound on Fee Lane when she was hit. The accident took place near the Kelley School of Business.

The cyclist was responsive but had cuts on both of her knees and one elbow when she was taken to Bloomington Hospital shortly after the incident.

The driver, Jake Schantz, 21, was driving a blue Jeep Cherokee with New York plates, heading eastbound on 11th Street, when he hit the cyclist crossing the intersection.

Schantz said he got out of the car, helped the woman and offered to drive her to the hospital before the IU Police Department arrived.

IUPD Chief of Police Keith Cash said the accident seems to be the cyclist’s fault, given she was riding on the sidewalk and traveling on the wrong side of the road.

On Aug. 31 a cyclist was also struck by a car while riding in a bike lane on Jordan Avenue near the Herman B Wells Library.

The accident occurred near one of the newly installed campus crosswalks, placed in high traffic areas on Fee Lane and 10th Street, near Herman B Wells Library and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

During the first week of school, IUPD did what Cash called an information blitz to inform students how to properly use the crosswalks.
