Braving 90-degree temperatures and more than 80 percent humidity, more than 1500 bikers rode from the Illinois border to the Ohio border Saturday in the 24th Ride Across INdiana, or RAIN.
The 160-mile ride, organized by Joe Anderson and the Bloomington Bicycle Club, followed the route of U.S. 40, which covers the Indiana stretch of the old National Road.
The first rider crossed the finish line at 1:21 p.m. at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., in six hours and 21 minutes. However, Anderson, who is stepping down after eight years, said he watches the line for the bikers who come in at 6:30 p.m. because they are usually new to the ride.
“They feel like they’ve conquered the world, is what they’ve done,” Anderson said.
