Getting around

IU Campus Bus

Transportation is included in your student fees, so milk the bus system for all it’s worth. You can access schedules and route information online, at the bus stops, from IU’s mobile site and in pamphlets on the buses. The buses run regularly during the week and at various times throughout the weekend. The campus bus system also offers a late-night “Night Owl service” on select routes Thursday through Saturday. It’s best to check the schedule before heading to a bus stop. Here are some tips you should know before you hop on:
1. Get to the bus stop a few minutes before your bus is scheduled to arrive. Sometimes the buses are late, but often they’re early.
2. If you plan on taking the bus when it’s raining, plan an extra ten minutes into your schedule. The buses get overcrowded when the weather gets bad, so you might have to wait for a second bus to arrive.
3. Don’t ask the bus driver to drop you off at a non-bus stop location. Just find the closest stop and walk to your destination.
4. Be aware of the people around you. Don’t take up extra seats with your backpack. Get out of the way if the person next to you needs to get off.
5. Hold on to something if you’re standing on the bus. Some drivers are better than others at stopping gracefully.
6. Not all of the stops are well-marked (or labeled on the schedule). It takes time to learn where the bus will stop on its route.

Ride a bike

Bringing a bike to campus? Check the IU Division of Transporation Services’ website for bike lane maps. Know the best places to bike before you hit the road.

Rent a car
New on campus, Zipcar provides students with 24/7 access to a car. The program is not run through IU, but anyone over the age of 18 can sign up ($35 registration fee) for the service online. Members reserve a vehicle online and pay hourly ($8-$9) or daily ($66-$72) fees.

IU students can ride Bloomington Transit buses free with a student ID. The local bus system is great for students living in off-campus apartments or students without cars. Check the schedule online at:
