Man vandalizes Poplars garage; assaults complainants with pipe

Two individuals claimed to have been struck with a pipe Saturday at Sixth and Dunn streets after a verbal argument ensued with a man vandalizing the Poplars parking garage, said IU Police Department Lt. Craig Munroe, reading from a police report.

IUPD Officer Brice Teter was dispatched in reference to a fight near the Poplars garage. Upon arrival he met IUPD Sgt. Shannon Ramey who was already on the scene with the two individuals who were accompanied by two others.

“One of the individuals had a large cut to the left side of his head and was bleeding heavily,” Monroe said.

The individual was transported to Bloomington Hospital.

The individuals informed officers that the subject who was vandalizing the garage had assaulted them with the pipe and rode his bicycle southbound, prior to IUPD arrival. They described the man appearing between 20 and 30 years of age and having black hair in a ponytail.

The four individuals claimed to have been walking home from Kilroy’s Bar and Grill  when they witnessed the man spray-painting the garage.

According to the report, one of the victims told the man, “you shouldn’t be doing that.” The man replied that they should mind their own business and a verbal altercation ensued.

One of the four individuals claimed to have called the man a “meth-head.”
As the incident escalated, the man punched one individual in the face and then removed a pipe from his bag and struck him in the head.

The exact type of weapon used in the altercation is unknown. One of the individuals identified it as a lead pipe, however, another individual suggested the weapon was made of plastic.

IUPD officers have not been able to locate the subject.
