As part of a group of progressive early ’90s bands called the Elephant Six Collective, which includes bands Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, The Olivia Tremor Control and Elf Power, The Apples in Stereo continue to pump out fresh sounds. Although this is The Apples’ seventh studio album, it is the first to feature new members John Dufilho, Bill Doss and John Ferguson.
“Travelers in Space and Time” focuses more on mixing poppy melodies with odd electronic sounds than the ultra-complicated styles associated with Robert Schneider’s earlier albums. Schneider is known for creating the non-Pythagorean scale, which is an alternative musical scale based on natural logarithms.
“Travelers” features a strange synth-mix sound, producing a very dreamy and a strange new-wave sort of psychedelia, while keeping simple pop song structures and melodies. The distorted vocals and various other-worldly electronic sounds launch the listener out of their natural environment to explore an alternate plane of musical creativity.
