Sprite Step Off
controversy revisited

The ladies of Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. would like to illuminate the aspects of our interviews with the Indiana Daily Student and experiences with the Sprite Step Off that were omitted from the IDS article on March 1.

The ladies of TAU chapter have worked extremely hard since September  2009 to prepare a step show that was $100,000 worthy.

This included brainstorming, trials, errors, sweat and tears. The $100,000 is scholarship money that will be used toward post-graduation aspirations.

We have members of the step team applying to optometry school, medical school, pharmacy school and law school, as well as graduate school.

The money the TAU chapter won is also matched by Sprite and given to IU to be used as scholarship money.

We did not enter the competition focused on the prize money, but to make history with an unprecedented event. Participating in the Sprite Step Off was a phenomenal experience that allowed our sisterly bond to grow in extraordinary ways.

Understanding how events transpired, the TAU chapter wholeheartedly believes that competition/results were NOT based on race.

We, as a team, acknowledge the co-first-place winner’s talent, creativity and overall well presentation of show.

We are appreciative of the desire for our University to highlight our success, but we wanted to shed light on the details of our IDS interviews as well as our experiences with the Sprite Step Off Competition as a whole.
