Indiana State Police said a fiery crash halted eastbound traffic on Interstate 465 on Indianapolis’ north side Tuesday, snarling rush-hour traffic on the heavily traveled highway.
Police estimated I-465’s eastbound lanes would remain closed at the Keystone Avenue exit until after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday due to debris from the three-vehicle crash.
The gas tank of a truck burst into flames around 2 p.m., creating a large fireball. Police said one person had non-life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Anthony Emery said traffic was diverted onto Keystone Avenue while repairs were made to the eastbound lanes.
The far left lane of I-465 westbound was closed at the same location for emergency crews.
Meanwhile, the state highway department has opened what it calls an express lane on I-465 as work starts to widen the highway on the north side of Indianapolis.
