With a quiet but familiar sound, The Soft Pack will remind listeners of the early raw roots of rock. With a notably stripped, surf-rock and punk sound they bring back the necessity of the guitar, vocals, drum and bass from which all of music originated.
The sound, slightly reminiscent of the early Strokes and the Ramones, is refreshing and brings back a nostalgia for long-lost garage bands. The exceptionally hard guitars and drums ring with defiance and energy across the album.
However, there isn’t much artistry or musicality in the album – just straight driving rock. There are hints of a potential punk revival though, and there is much to be said for the simplicity in this album, which is its greatest appeal.
Somehow, with all the complex and layered music there is today, it’s surprising how this album is so wonderful to listen to. I guess the simple three-chord garage rock sound will never get old.
