Crash leaves semi dangling off highway bridge
A crash left the cab of a semitrailer dangling off a highway bridge on the north side of Muncie.
The Star Press reports that the driver of a car involved in the Wednesday crash was seriously injured, while the truck driver was able to safely climb from the cab.
Police closed the interchange of U.S. 35 and Indiana 67 while crews worked to remove the cab and the trailer, which was partially hanging over the bridge’s railing. Most of the cab was over the edge, with the passenger side wheels appearing to hold it up.
Delaware County Sheriff George Sheridan, Jr. said he believes the car pulled into the path of the truck. The semi from Provision Farms of Ossian was carrying soybeans.
$20M Ohio River bridge grant far short of request
A $20 million federal stimulus grant toward replacing a deteriorating Ohio River bridge is only about one-fifth of what Indiana and Kentucky officials had sought for the project.
The federal Transportation Department announced Wednesday that the states would share the grant for replacing the bridge connecting Madison, Ind. and Milton, Ky.
The two states requested $95 million in federal funding for the estimated $131 million cost of a new Milton-Madison Bridge, with the states splitting the rest.
Madison Mayor Tim Armstrong said he doesn’t yet know where the remaining funding will come from or whether this summer’s planned start of construction will be delayed.
Officials from the Indiana and Kentucky transportation departments didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
