Ex-mistress testifies pastor killed his wife

A former minister’s ex-mistress has testified that he admitted to killing his wife.

The woman testified Tuesday in the Waco murder trial of Matt Baker, who faces up to life in prison if convicted of killing his wife, Kari, in 2006.

Vanessa Bulls says Baker told her that he drugged his wife, handcuffed her to a bed under the guise of a romantic evening and smothered her with a pillow until she died.

Baker has maintained that his wife committed suicide because of severe depression. His attorney, Guy James Gray, has told McLennan County jurors that the case, initially ruled a suicide, was reopened only when authorities learned Baker was having an affair.

Baker is a former Baptist minister who has preached at several Waco-area churches during the past few years.
