Daniels: Indiana strong

PROPERTY TAX CAPS
Gov. Mitch Daniels commended the General Assembly for fully passing legislation that could put a constitutional cap on property taxes, pending the results of a November referendum.
Daniels said Indiana is one of the few states to not raise taxes during the recent recession.
“We will not make this recession worse by adding one cent to the tax burden of our fellow citizens,” Daniels said.

NIX TOWNSHIPS
Daniels called on legislators to press for smaller government, notably to push for the elimination of townships statewide.
“It’s wasteful, it’s antiquated, it produces poor decisions, and it obscures the public’s ability to assign either credit for success or blame for failure,”Daniels said.

EDUCATION
In a year when the state cut higher education spending by $150 million, Daniels said it’s still much worse in states where education has been cut more drastically. Daniels stressed the importance of literacy with school children at lower levels.
“Sending an illiterate child on to higher grades is unfair to the next teacher, damaging to our state’s future, but cruelest of all, disastrous to the young life being blighted by that failure,” Daniels said.

POLITICS
Some state politicians are still frustrated by a lack of game plan from the governor on how to solve persistent problems, others completely agree with him.
“We think that’s important that state universities take the same step that so many families and businesses across our state have made and that’s to live within our means,” Rep. Matt Bell, R-Avilla said.
