Awards recognize IU greeks for their scholarship, leadership

IU President Michael McRobbie took the stage at Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union on Wednesday to applaud the greek community for being one of the oldest, largest and most influential greek systems in the nation.

“Since 1845, the IU greek community has played an important role in fostering student development and leadership,” McRobbie said. “Twenty percent of all our undergraduate students today are a part of this community.”

McRobbie’s praise kicked off the 2009 Greek Awards which honored individual chapters and members from all four greek councils: the Interfraternity Council,
Panhellenic Association, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multi-Cultural Greek Council.

The awards are given out each year and are based on a fraternity or sorority’s commitment to the five pillars of excellence which include education, scholarship, brotherhood/sisterhood, leadership and citizenship, PHA President Annie Raeder said.

She said that the chapters and members are nominated and then judged by a panel of 50 different volunteers from the community, including faculty members and various greek chapter advisors.
