You’d think after three separate releases, I’d be tired of paying to watch “Watchmen.”
But you’d be wrong.
Though there’s no new material, per se, the “Ultimate Cut” includes every scrap of movie-related media that’s hit store shelves in one tidy spot. And the main meat, the movie itself, is still my favorite of the year.
The star of the five-disc set (or four-disc, depending on whether you’re into Blu-ray) is a new cut, this time with the animated “Tales of the Black Freighter” spliced into the action.
This final step in producing fidelity to the comic is pulled off flawlessly, developing the grudging relationship between the two Bernies and sweeping from the real sets into comic animation in a way the doesn’t distract from the larger story.
The “Ultimate Cut” features “Under the Hood” – Hollis Mason’s autobiography and expose on the Minutemen that was released on the same disc with “Tales of the Black Freighter” in March – and the “Motion Comics” that were released in advance of the film.
It also includes a commentary from Zack Snyder and the graphic novel’s artist Dave Gibbons and everything released on the “Director’s Cut” in July. For fans of the film (and the novel) this is a must-purchase.
Watch the worthiest cut so far
