New fraternity focuses on community

Co-ed organization making name for itself on campus during their 1st year

In its first year on campus, Sigma Alpha Lambda has set itself apart in the fraternity scene with a strong focus on academics, personal relationships and service opportunities.

Unlike some other fraternities, SAL is a co-ed service fraternity whose members do not live together. Though it is a nationwide organization, its IU chapter developed last spring when junior Annissa Michael saw a flyer online for new chapters and decided to take the leadership opportunity.

Now the president of SAL, Michael said she chose to start this program because she felt she hadn’t found her special group at IU.

“I figure many people feel that way at such a large university, so this was my chance to break the barrier of large, anonymous organizations and bring about a more face-to-face group,” Michael said.

Starting less than a year ago with a small core group, SAL has already expanded to more than 200 members but still manages to keep a personal feel as it grows.

“We’re focusing on building a group but also getting to know the people involved,” junior and vice president of public relations Alexandra Hoover said.

Anyone can join SAL, as long as they have at least a 3.0 GPA. If accepted, one is considered a member for life.

“I joined SAL because it was an opportunity to help out in the community along with other people who cared about both the community and their own academics and strive to be community leaders,” junior and treasurer Ashland Denison said.

SAL does not have any time or volunteer requirements for its members. People can choose to do as much or as little service work as they like.

SAL has partnered with organizations such as Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and Homeward Bound for service opportunities and plans to continue to make more connections with different organizations in the area.

“We usually have at least two big service opportunities a semester, but we are always looking for more,” Hoover said.

For those looking to join SAL, benefits of the program extend beyond participation in volunteer work throughout the community. Leadership opportunities and scholarships for grades and extensive SAL involvement are also available for members.

“This organization fits to everyone’s dedication level, and there is a spot for everyone,” Denison said.
