WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — West Lafayette's police chief has decided that a city officer acted properly when he shot a man believed to have fled from a robbery in a park near the Purdue University campus.
Chief Jason Dombkowski said Monday the officer would return to full duty immediately. The officer had been on paid administrative leave since the shooting early Sept. 17 near Tapawingo Park along the Wabash River.
Dombkowski said the officer believed 20-year-old Brandon Winters of Lafayette had a gun and was about to shoot him when he fired one round, hitting Winters in the jaw.
Police said Winters was still being treated Monday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and could be released by midweek. Prosecutors have filed several robbery and drug charges against Winters.
