Class of 2013, congratulations.
Not only have you navigated Welcome Week with flying colors, but you have successfully completed the first week of school. You’re now beginning to establish a routine which will undoubtedly make the weeks fly by. Before you know it, you will be studying for finals, heading home for spring break and then leaving campus to pursue your summer endeavors.
The daily monotony of class, eating, Facebook and sleeping can seem tempting.
But is that why you came to college?
Is that all there is to experience at IU?
The answer is no. You’ve probably heard tour guides state there are more than 600 clubs and organizations on campus. Six hundred! Where to begin? Let me help.
Union Board is having a call-out meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today in Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union. I would strongly recommend you stop by – chances are good you’ll find more than free pizza.
Union Board is IU’s largest programming body on campus, bringing concerts like N.E.R.D, Bob Dylan, Ben Folds and Lupe Fiasco; lectures with Maya Angelou, Mikhail Gorbachev, Ben Stein, John Edwards and Ehud Barak; free weekly film series in the Whittenberger Auditorium; comedy shows; theatrical productions; live local music; roadtrips around the country and so much more.
With Union Board, there are 13 entirely student-driven committees centered on an area of event planning. If you have an idea for any concert, lecture, comedy show, videogame competition, debate, movie or anything else, you can see it come to fruition.
Here’s another reason to join Union Board: This is our 100th year on campus. In joining Union Board, you’re joining an organization with 100 years of experience unifying the campus with exhilarating events.
Union Board is also a great way to meet other students, build your resume with leadership experience and, most importantly, have fun.
And with over 800 alumni around the world – leaders in politics, business and the entertainment industry – it’s comforting to know you are joining an organization with a global reach.
