Religion and culture

Sometimes, it’s easy to feel like your way of life isn’t normal if it isn’t necessarily mainstream. If you’re feeling a little lost, here are a few groups and places to check out:

The Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at IU is located at 730 E. 3rd St., and is IU's leading resource for Jewish students.

Religious

Campus Crusade for Christ
The largest Christian organization on campus, CRU meets for worship (complete with live band) at 8 p.m. each Thursday, in Room 122 of the Chemistry building. Aside from the weekly meetings, CRU also offers small group Bible studies and large group retreats throughout the year.

Christian Student Fellowship
1968 N. Jordan Ave.
Students can choose to live in this renovated greek house and be a part of a supportive Christian environment, 24/7. Rent is comparable to IU housing and comes with a meal plan.

Helene G. Simon Hillel Center
730 E. Third St.
Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Jewish students can turn to the Hillel Center for its many social, cultural and religious events. Friday Shabbat services (conservative and reform) are offered at 6:15 p.m. each week as well as services for the High Holy Days and dinners for Erev Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur.

Muslim Student Union
Fourth Floor Student Activities Tower in the IMU
The Muslim Student Union not only seeks to worship together, but is also an active participant in the annual Fast-a-Thon, a Bloomington Community Kitchen event, and also take part in an information program about Islam.

Cultural

IU Asian Culture Center
807 E. 10th St.
Open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
The ACC helps international students from Asian countries adapt to life in Bloomington and offers a place for Asian and Asian American students to bond over heritage. The group also helps to promote issues affecting the Asian community with outreach programs.

Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center
275 N. Jordan Ave.
Neal-Marshall is a resource for all black (and all other) IU students. The Center increases awareness about issues facing blacks through outreach programs and events, and also serves as a comfort zone for students.

La Casa Latino Cultural Center
715 E. Seventh St.
Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday
La Casa is an advocacy office, working to improve awareness of important issues concerning the Latin community. Small groups are offered for students as well as outreach events.

Sexual Orientation

GLBT Student Support Services
705 E. Seventh St.
Open from 8 a.m. to 5p.m. on weekdays
The GLBT office serves as a support for all gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender students, as well as a campus resource for all GLBT issues. Aside from offering outreach programs, it also offers free counseling to students.
