Swine flu causes IU to suspend programs in Mexico

IU officials announced today that they are suspending summer study programs in Mexico because of the North American Human Influenza A outbreak until further notice, according to an IU press release.

About 50 to 60 IU students will be affected by the decision, according to the press release. Programs through the IU Honors Program and the Office of Overseas Study will be affected by the decision.

IU’s vice president for international affairs, Patrick O’Meara, made the announcement today after consulting with the IU Emergency Preparedness Committee.

O’Meara said in the press release that IU faculty and staff that are planning a trip to Mexico should reconsider their travel plans until the flu threats decrease.

IU will continue to look closely at the situation in Mexico on a weekly basis to consider when to re-open the programs in Mexico.
