Congress has for years pursued policies that are out of touch with everyday reality for Hoosier families and businesses. Skyrocketing health care costs are hurting business margins and family budgets alike, while health insurers and pharmaceutical companies are profiting hand-over-fist.
Rising costs have made it harder for young people to go to college and financial aid harder to repay. Powerful interests avoid paying their fair share by carving loopholes into the tax code, while investments in public transit and broadband Internet have languished.
But this year, when our economy and our people need it most, we finally have an alternative. President Obama’s budget proposal invests in health care, education and infrastructure, and helps pay for it by closing tax loopholes and cutting subsidies to banks, insurance companies and big oil.
The question now is whether Senators Evan Bayh and Richard Lugar will stand up for the President’s plan or let the same old special interests strip it down and gut it. We hope they stand up for our country’s priorities.
