The Union Board’s 24th annual Live From Bloomington Club Night will
invade town Thursday and Friday. A panel of music connoisseurs
hand-picked the event’s 19 local artists, who will also be featured on
a LFB compilation CD. All proceeds will go to the Hoosier Hills Food
Bank.
Check below for a breakdown of the tracks on this year’s compilation.
1. Jenn Cristy – “Butterfly Wings”
Cristy is a piano singer-songwriter, backed by only keys and sparse
percussion, but the dark, jaunty melodies of this track are instantly
attractive.
2. Alexander the Great – “Tree of Knowledge”
Earnest vocals grab the listeners’ ears as the upbeat song moves
quickly, dotted by triumphant trumpet blasts and uplifting synth.
3. Impure Jazz – “Huckleberry Tots”
This instrumental outfit offers a track seamlessly woven together,
punctuated by sharp drums, bass with bravado and wandering, chiming
guitar melodies that turn into chunky, powerful riffs by the song’s end.
4. Eric Radoux – “The Coroner”
While Radoux’s true magic lies in his live, multi-instrumental
performances, “The Coroner” is a beautiful nod to his talent as his
voice soars over warm acoustic guitar and piano, occasionally visited
by his skillful trumpet playing.
5. Trio In Stereo – “Jupiter”
With an almost haunting introduction, Trio’s “Jupiter” gradually
blossoms halfway through to an upbeat, distortion-laden track that is
simultaneously guitar-heavy and dance-inducing.
6. Coyaba – “Pressure”
A slow reggae-funk jam, “Pressure” slithers and slinks through five
minutes of wah-wah guitar and bleating brass to create a sonicly
surprising groove.
7. The Country Death – “To Walk in the Garden”
Piercing flutes proudly introduce the upbeat, alt. country waltz of “To
Walk in the Garden” that ambles majestically from start to finish.
8. Red Bird –
“Red Bird”
Michael Bushman, formerly of the Alarmists (Calm Down), shouts his
heart out over this raw-rocking number by new project Red Bird, one of
my personal favorites on the disc.
9. e.p. Hall – “The Emperor’s Note”
One of the few females voices on LFB, e.p. Hall is a haunting presence on the acoustic, lo-fi sound of “The Emperor’s Note.”
10. FESO – “Old’s Kool”
Hands down the coolest cut on the record, FESO remembers the sounds of
old-school hip-hop and brings his incredible live show and flow to disc
in the fresh, laid-back feel of this track.
11. Everybody – “A Pangea Coming”
With a diverse array of instrumentation, Everybody exercises their
indie-on-the-bayou aesthetic through the relaxed sounds of “A Pangea
Coming.”
12. Jonah Malarsky – “Bones”
With just his voice and his acoustic guitar, singer-songwriter Malarsky
moves his way through a breathtaking and mesmerizing melody on “Bones.”
13. Spank Ray – “Forever. Together. Forever...”
Distortion runs rampant on the bass-heavy riffs and pleading vocals of
this track, kicking the disc’s decibel levels up a few notches.
14. Applecore – “Two Guys, a Girl, & a Prosthetic”
A fun, fast-talking track, Applecore bring a straightforward punk
aesthetic to “Two Guys...” that adds a fierce, much-needed edge to LFB.
15. You’re a Liar – “Big Bear”
The second of the album’s instrumental tracks, “Big Bear” is a showcase
of the group’s technical guitar skills a la the Mars Volta or Fall of
Troy.
16. Secrets Between Sailors – “In The Summertime”
With brightly distorted guitars, Secrets Between Sailors bring back the
sounds of early alternative rock with “In the Summertime.”
17. Tammar – “The Last Line”
Ethereal and airy, the repetitive sounds of “The Last Line” lull the listener into a quixotic trance.
18. Spirit Spine – “How Soon?”
Influenced by artists like New Order and Panda Bear, IU freshman Joseph
Denney shines in his solo outfit with the pulsating, digital rhythms of
“How Soon?”
19. The Pirate Flags – “Medicinal Beer”
Kitschy but cute, the pirate-themed reel of “Medicinal Beer” is a fun way to wrap up a CD full of impressive, local tracks.
