The new Missy E.

She is one of the most talented female singers in the music business: Unlike most other female rap stars, Missy Elliott writes her own songs in addition to performing them.  Her new album “Block Party” is less poppy and more serious than her previous efforts.

On this release, Elliott changes her usually energetic and exceptional rap style to a more R&B-like sound. The dance and poppy feel are still there, but the spirit of the music has changed.

While the tracks have more energy and determination than ever, they do not sound like her traditional songs.

The album is definitely still hip-hop-driven but with a less poppy and more serious sound.

In “Best Best,” she sings more than her other songs, and the lyrics are more mature, with less repetition and fewer catchphrases. On the other hand, “Shake Your Pom Pom” has a similar sound to “Lose Control” where the sound is a little more staccato.

Elliot’s popularity is defined by her dance-able songs and catchy beats, but this album goes in a more serious direction. She collaborated with artists from T-Pain to Pharrell to Timbaland, helping her combine hip-hop, mainstream and R&B on this album.  “Block Party” shows a maturity and evolution for Missy that really shows her progression as an artist.

But don’t expect to hear these tracks at clubs or parties.
