I read in the IDS and the Hoosier Times how the Bloomington Faculty Council regrets that gays and lesbians were offended when Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was appointed to the Poling Chair of Business and Government.
This is just another round of despair for gay Americans who live entire lifetimes under expressions of “regret” from straight America.
“We regret that you cannot have equal rights at this time.”
“We regret that you may not be honest in the military.”
“We regret to tell you that we think you don’t deserve to exist – but don’t blame us for having a ‘difference of opinion.’”
“We regret that you may be fired, excluded, bashed or killed.”
Somehow, it never seems very pragmatic to do anything about these injustices, does it? Let me say that to those who live – even here in the Land of the Free – under such conditions, it seems like an eternity.
I would like to thank the Bloomington Faculty Council for taking up this issue. I just wish they could revoke the award altogether.
