The IU School of Journalism announced during winter break two new faculty members.
Former foreign correspondent Joe Coleman will serve as the Roy W. Howard
Professional in Residence, according to an IU press release. Tim Franklin, former Baltimore Sun editor and senior vice president, serves as the Louis A. Weil Jr. Endowed Chair.
Coleman spent the past four years as the bureau chief for The Associated Press in Tokyo. During his reporting, he has traveled to Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Beth Moellers, director of communications for the IU School of Journalism, said Coleman “fits the bill” because Roy W. Howard was interested in international reporting and often traveled.
“For as much as Roy W. Howard loved journalism and global travel, especially in Asia, I believe he would have enjoyed long talks with an outstanding journalist such as Joe Coleman, who has reported from around the world for almost 20 years,” said IU School of Journalism Dean Brad Hamm in a prepared statement.
Franklin is an IU alumnus and directs a new sports journalism program at the IU-Purdue University Indianapolis campus, according to the press release.
Franklin was the editor of the Orlando Sentinel and the Indianapolis Star before becoming editor of the Baltimore Sun.
Franklin also worked as a reporter and editor for 17 years at the Chicago Tribune.
“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to return to IU and work with the faculty, staff, administration and students in continuing to build one of America’s premiere journalism schools,” Franklin said in the press release. “I’m especially looking forward to starting up and directing a new sports journalism center in Indianapolis and Bloomington. The IU School of Journalism is the perfect place for the nation’s pre-eminent sports journalism program.”
