Falling stars

Artist: Starflyer 59
Album: Dial M

Starflyer 59’s latest release, “Dial M,” is the 11th in a long list of studio albums, and it might need to be the last. They claimed that with each album their sound has changed, but for all of the changes taking place, they certainly show a lack of inspiration.

Overall, their lyrics tend to be heartfelt and personal with references to the Christian influence for which they’re known. Their sound is somewhat soothing, but unfortunately, very bland. The combination of Jason Martin’s unenthusiastic vocals with uninspired drum beats and a consistently simple and drawn-out melody is strikingly dull.

The first two songs off the album, “Minor Keys” and “The Brightest of the Head,” seem to be almost the same song with different lyrics at times. The amount of variation does not improve as the album progresses. There is a recognizable tune and beat that seems to be used on most of the songs. It is especially noticeable in “Automatic,” which has the same sound as all of the other songs but with a slower tempo.

The repetition that permeates the album makes it sound tired, and it should be an indication that the band has been around for too long. After several years with Tooth and Nail Records, it may be time for the group to finally throw in the towel.

Standout Track: “Automatic”
Grade: C
