Bridezillas attack

BrideWars

Yes, “Bride Wars” is entirely unrealistic, overly dramatic and plotless. But you’ll still love it. In that awesomely bad way that romantic comedies melt your heart and insult your intelligence at the exact same time.

When Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) find out they’ll have to share their wedding day if they both want it at NYC’s swanky Plaza Hotel, they turn from BFFs to Bridezillas.

The film’s biggest flaw is that while it seems to poke fun at obsessive wedding-goers, it embraces them at the same time. Hudson and Hathaway’s friendship is relatable, though exaggerated. You’ll see glimpses of your own friends in their characters. But the film also sends mixed messages with its female stereotypes.

Although Emma and Liv are constantly plotting evil against each other, Hudson and Hathaway are hardly monsters, but likeable characters most will relate to. They play the worst-of-the-worst pranks on each other. Emma dyes Liv’s hair blue and sends Liv sweets so she won’t fit in to her precious Vera Wang dress. But Liv sets up Emma’s raunchy spring break video to play atop wedding music while Emma walks down the aisle. (Gasp. Oh, no, she didn’t.)

So what if the pranks are too ridiculous to ever happen? They’re still hilarious. Great one-liners (though some of the best are unfortunately spoiled by previews), and bizarre stunts give reason for even guys to possibly, maybe, enjoy the film too.

Okay, so the actual plot is limited in development and the characters are shallow at best. But for chick flick fans, does it really matter? It’s funny, it’s entertaining, and it has lots and lots of white dresses, sappy music, and pretty proposals (like the ring in a fortune cookie from Chinese take-out — awww). Oscar nominations aside, if you’re looking for a quick and happy film, this one’s a keeper.
