Monroe County Commissioners ban texting while driving

There are a lot of things you can't do while driving in Monroe County, and texting is now one of them.

The Monroe County Commissioners approved the county-wide ordinance Dec. 19.

A $25 fine will be issued to anyone caught writing, sending or reading text messages or emails while driving. Though the ban was approved Dec. 19, it will not go in effect until Jan 1, 2009.

But the ban does not cover phone calls or people using hands-free devices, authorized emergency personnel or people needing emergency assistance.
