House needs a new family definition

It is nearly impossible for me to begin to critique Mr. House’s letter, “Proposition 8 a triumph for families” because I’m simply astounded by how much bigotry is expressed.

In my opinion, Proposition 8 is an outrageous and hateful piece of legislation that, while it might be considered a triumph for the conservative right, is a kick to the teeth for a segment of our population that wants the same rights as everybody else in how they express their love.

Not only is his letter offensive to the GLBT community, but his assertion that children benefit most from the stereotypical two-parent family is an insult to all of the single-parent households that work multiple jobs to try to support their children.

Without a doubt, the head of a single-parent household is trying just as hard as a pair of parents would to ensure that his or her children are loved. Plenty of well-functioning adults have grown up in households run by single or gay parents.

At the end of the day, Proposition 8 is about legislating morality.

Telling people that they are wrong and different for wanting to spend the rest of their lives with someone is what the passing of Proposition 8 is about.

Shutting your eyes and closing your ears won’t make the gay population go away. The GLBT community is looking at people like Mr. House and wondering why he is denying them the ability to marry. Imagine if someone told you, Mr. House, that you weren’t allowed to marry that person because your marriage didn’t fit your idea of morality.

In closing, if I have children, I plan on telling them about the existence of homosexuality simply because I don’t plan on shielding my children from something that is prevalent in the world. And if something would happen to me so that I would be incapacitated to raise my children, I would be all too willing to give them to a loving homosexual couple who would be unwilling to produce children on their own.
