Gunning down bad techno music

Eyeliner and swoopy haircuts: the perfect combination for electropop.

Techno and electronica music have often been thrown on most people’s back burner or is only pulled out to function as a dance-party soundtrack.

Shiny Toy Guns bring their own version of electronica to the pop/rock music scene from Shawnee, Okla., once again with their second album Season of Poison, proving their style of music isn’t just for the dance floor. In 2005 the band released their first album We Are Pilots, featuring the song “You Are the One” along with two other singles.

Season of Poison shows a slightly darker sound than the band’s previous album. By simply looking at the song’s titles, it seems as if the album is centered on a rocky relationship and the feelings that come with it.

This batch of song’s also carries a harder and stronger rock sound than what might be expected from the band, but it adds to the subject matter of relationships creating tension. And really, it’s still done in an upbeat, fast-moving way.

Lead singer Carah Faye Charnow and singer/guitarist Chad Petree present their usual style of back-and-forth vocals on different tracks, but also switch off solo duties on a few tracks.

This creates a sort of “relationship” within the album with individual songs representing all sides of a relationship. “I Owe You A Love Song” presents the lead singers going back and forth about the days they used to spend together and how they could try to fix their problems.

Shiny Toy Guns’ sophomore album successfully follows up We Are Pilots with more catchy tunes that are easily relatable to anyone who’s willing to listen.
