STATE SENATOR, DISTRICT 40
Vi Simpson (D)
Age: 62
Education: Law degree from IU School of Law
Experience: Currently state senator and assistant minority leader. Serves on Senate Health, Insurance/Financial Institutions, Homeland Security/Transportation and Rules Committees. Expertise in budget, finance and tax policy, health care reform. Former Monroe County Auditor. Former Executive Director, Heritage Education Foundation (developed environmental science curriculum for Indiana public schools).
Top priorities if elected: “During the next session, we will create a new budget which will reflect the state’s priorities for the next two years. The priorities that matter most to the people of this district are the ones that we must fight to make a part of this budget:
- Improving our schools and keeping universities affordable for all
- Creating and keeping good jobs here at home
- Protecting the environment and pursuing alternative energy and transportation opportunities
- Making health care accessible and affordable for every man, woman and child in Indiana
Why ARE YOU running? “Presidential elections excite the electorate and draw new voters to the polls. But the quality of our educational institutions, the affordability of health services and the economic future of our state is more directly determined by Indiana’s General Assembly. National fiscal crises are having a significant impact on Indiana. We need state representatives and senators in the legislature with the courage to make tough decisions and to fight to protect our families and our future. That’s the kind of state senator I am, and I will continue to work on behalf of the people of Monroe and Brown counties.”
Leslie Compton (R)
Leslie Compton has dropped out of the race for state Senator, according to Indiana’s Republican party office.
