Experience: U.S. House of Representatives, Indiana’s 9th District; current member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, House Science and Technology Committee and the Joint Economic Committee; member of the Indiana General Assembly; small-business owner in Seymour; named executive director of the Indiana State Student Assistance Commission by former Gov. Evan Bayh.

Top Priorities if elected: “The faltering economy affects all aspects of our lives – even for students. The credit crunch could make it significantly more difficult to secure college loans. Although I voted against the financial bailout package, my vote was not a signal of inaction. Our financial crisis requires comprehensive action. One way to stimulate our economy and create jobs is to make a real investment in alternative energy sources.”
 
Why you are running? “In 2006 voters wanted change. I believe I have made progress – like increasing the minimum wage for the first time in a decade, cutting interest rates on student loans, raising fuel efficiency standards for our vehicles, funding the Veterans Affairs at the highest level since its creation and enacting pay-as-you-go spending rules. But there is still work to be done, and that is why I am running for reelection . . .”
