IDS ignores incident

I am writing to discuss my outrage with the Indiana Daily Student’s reporting. On Oct. 15, the IDS ran a story about Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis, who injured his ankle in the IU versus Iowa game. What the IDS has neglected to report, three weeks late, is an incident that all IU students should be aware of.

Late on Sept. 29, a sophomore walked back to his dorm room from a friend’s house. As he trekked down 10th Street, he was stopped by a group of individuals who claimed to be lost. The sophomore, an amiable individual, agreed to walk with the group and point them in the right direction. Before he realized what happened, he was knocked to the pavement by a blow to his temple.

The group beat the sophomore for his money. After they fled the scene, he mustered what little strength he had and retreated to his friend’s house, and then to the hospital. At the end of the night, the sophomore had a broken nose and four other facial fractures.

The next day, his left eye was swollen shut. The following week, he underwent reconstructive surgery for the broken bones in his face. Last week, he finally took off the bandages.

My question is: Where was the IDS during this tragedy? Three weeks later, and not even the slightest mention? I imagine there have been plenty of people walking down 10th Street late at night without a care in the world, completely oblivious to the potential danger they are putting themselves in.

The IDS was more than happy to run stories about injured athletes. I suggest that if the IDS intends to live up to its assertions of professionalism, it start reporting on issues that are truly important.

I think keeping students informed about issues of security is pretty important. Much more so than keeping them up to date on athletic injuries.
