Our nation is currently engaged in two wars and facing a struggling economy at home. Students are paying more for our tuition and to fill up our cars. America’s reputation abroad has been severely damaged. As students, we believe that we have a responsibility to speak out on these issues and others by exercising our right to vote.
But you cannot vote in Bloomington on Nov. 4 if you have not first registered to vote in Indiana by the deadline of Monday, Oct. 6. On Election Day all you will need is a state-issued ID, such as your Indiana driver’s license, your IU-Bloomington ID or a passport to bring to the polls.
You can also vote absentee and even before Election Day at specially designated “early-voting centers.” If you are not already registered, you can do so at the Union Lit Desk on the Mezzanine level of the Indiana Memorial Union (right around the corner from Burger King). Contact Students for Change at 812-841-7635 if you have any questions.
Indiana, usually ignored during presidential elections, has emerged as a real battleground state. The polls currently show Obama and McCain locked in a dead heat. College students have the ability to help decide the winner in Indiana, which could potentially give Obama or McCain the electoral votes needed to become president. I am an Obama supporter, and I hope you cast your vote for change in November. However, more importantly, I hope that you register to vote so your voice will be heard.
