Not the Rage

Thursday’s Indiana Daily Student column was “Teen mothers are all the rage” by Claire Burke. ‘All the rage’ I would hardly say only because this is what sells in my opinion.

It starts off by saying, “The Spears family has done it again”. Why must we keep relating everything back to Jamie Lynn? Is it because here she is, another young female that lives the life of fame and at the age of 17 had a baby? Oh, well she made the decision to have unprotected sex – the same as people do everyday and the outcome was that she got pregnant just as ordinary people do.

Next, it went on to discuses how Jamie “reportedly brought” vice-presidential candidate daughter Bristol clothing for her baby. This is what people do in America when someone is having a baby. They buy gifts: nothing unusual about that. And to think that this was some publicity scam: I am pretty sure not being in the news one time for doing something good is okay with her.

This article was not just about Jamie Lynn. The focus quickly turned to Sarah Palin, “political image” and Bristol stating that it had not interfered with her mom’s image. Of course, this should have not even been a question at hand. If so, then what has society turned into these days? A place where we judge people based on the mistakes that family members have made?

Finally, the view of the article changes and it’s as if you agree that society is changing and we are slowly accepting the idea of teen pregnancy. If so, then I believe that this should have been the focus of the article rather than who is doing what and how one might be using this to either get ahead or behind in life. And I would have to agree things are changing and we must move forward away from the past.
